It's Raining, not Pouring

I don’t know if you heard, but there was a rainstorm that whipped through New York the other day. It flooded (some) subway stations, created some videos on the internet (what else is new), and led to some businesses (like your local med clinic and sandwich shop) to close a little early.

It stopped raining. And my pants that were soaked on the morning commute (I used eight paper towels to dry the lower shin area in the 13th floor alternate bathroom upon arrival) were dry on the walk home around 4:30.

The streets were clear, it was calm, and I met up with a good friend over a beer or two at a neighborhood watering hole. Why am I just piecing together my evening? That’s not exciting.

What is exciting? I don’t want to use any trigger words that create that invincible unidentifiable creative movement to zip through your body and mind. Word choice was always a category on short response and certain writing quizzes in school. And you can grade me on this word choice.

What is exciting? Things that used to be annoying are annoying again. (B). I am laughing my ass off to Will Ferrell on ManningCast (A). People appreciate people (‘people helping people’ – Wedding Crashers reference (crude C). Work is work and dates are dates (unsatisfactory).

Life is moving fast. Time is flying. And things aren’t as bad as they seem. Maybe that’s me as an optimist. Maybe that’s me as someone who only writes on Facebook for the baby boomer generation. And unsubscribes from the mostly garbage on Instagram or TikTok. Maybe that’s because I see it happening around me – kids at school arguing about a bag of chips, run of the mill social events, complaining about bad dates.

It was pouring a few years ago. Winds were gusting from all sorts of directions, and the rain and hail did not stop. Last Friday it was the hardest it had rained in the city in a long time. But it subsided.

In an effort to avoid going into too much analysis (analysis paralysis), I’ll keep this one short and let you define and curate your own metaphor.

But ask yourself a serious question. Are things that bad? If they are, put down any piece of technology, go do a 30-minute walk outside on a nice day or sit and have a coffee at a local establishment, or do 45 minutes in the gym with only you and nothing in your pockets, and let your mind relax.

Medium is a good blog. There’s some positive stuff on there. A recent post I read concluded with something beautiful.

“A relaxed mind is a powerful mind.”

P.S. Written in airplane mode.
